Leo is one of Hollywood’s most recognized names. Here in British Columbia things are no different. Although the Leo Awards don’t represent our favorite actor from Titanic, they do generate an equal amount of local entertainment buzz.The Leo Awards honour BC’s best film and television productions for achievement and talent. In the category most relevant to VFS students, Best Student Production , VFS projects have earned a stunning five out of five possible nominations for the 2004 annual event, to be held May 27-28.

Andrew Park’s animated short Doggy Style is nominated alongside 2D classmates Kevin Elam for No Comply, Julia Gohle’s Drawn Life, and Irvan Hanafl’s The Glass Sword. Film student Dan West is also nominated for the short film Alarium, which he produced with classmates Adam Bagatto, Craig Rice, Joel Smith, John Garland, Julien Freeman, Lori Lozinski, Pat Hickey, Steve Deneault, and Steve Lucas.

The philosopher Rousseau was reportedly told, “God is calling you. Go to Annecy.” For the second consecutive year, VFS 2D students are experiencing a slightly different - yet no less exciting - call to this medieval lakeside town nestled in the French Alps.For professionals, devotees, and animation fans alike, Annecy is an annual pilgrimage. Held the second week of June, the festival screens more than 600 films, and offers aspiring animators an opportunity to meet admired filmmakers, while giving grizzled veterans the chance to reconnect with colleagues.

“Annecy clarifies why we choose the art and industry of animation as our livelihood,” writes VFS 2D Program Manager Anne Denman-Wilde. “Its warm atmosphere lends itself to relaxed conversation over a glass of wine and a sumptuous meal, and to immerse in the culture, personalities, and wit of the animation community.”

This year, 2D graduates Adam Yaniv and Aron Steinke are making the trip. To help guide their way, last year’s VFS nominee Steve Dorchester (2D41), who was selected for his film The Key , offers some helpful advice about his experience at the festival.
